Haunted History – The Athens Mental Hospital

athensOk so, We already know that there are a ton of abandoned psychiatric establishments to investigate for ghosts, this one is no exception!  The Athens Mental hospital in Ohio is still mostly intact today, but a far cry from the magnificent structure that it had originally been, in the beginning.  Athens was one of the largest facilities for the insane in the United States.  It first opened its doors in January of 1874 and at that time mostly provided care to Civil War soldiers that were suffering with what we know today as PTSD.  But as all things do when you mix Doctor’s and crazy, things went bad quickly.

As years went on staff began to realize that they could put most of the patients to work at some of their various facilities, such as the farm  where the institution realized great profits.  Wasn’t long after that, they became greedy, taking on anyone that was brought there with intent on making profits.  To make matters worse, Athens had gained the reputation for being a good place to dump family members that you didn’t want to care for.  Grandma and Grandpa along with rebellious teenagers were quickly accepted.  By the 1950’s nearly 2000 patients were housed here, nearly triple the facility’s intended occupancy.

Besides unwanted family members, Athens was known to hold some of the most notorious of the criminally insane!  So, add in a little electro-shock therapy and of course the always popular Lobotomy and you’ve got a damn party right!  As you can imagine, most patients put every effort into behaving, but those that didn’t, well let’s just say their attitudes were adjusted quickly.

Some of these ill-behaved patients would be restrained for days at a time, or several of them could be crammed into a tiny holding cell that had been constructed to hold only 1 patient and of course there were the frequent and regular beatings by the staff.

There was always a reason to beat someone too, and if the beatings didn’t set them straight then there must have been something wrong with them right?! Yeah, those were the ones that were subjected to lobotomies.  Now, there were two methods of performing this procedure.  One was to remove the skull and then take out sections of the frontal lobe, If desired results were not obtained, there was always more brain to be removed!

lobotomyThe second method was to subject the patient to electro shock until they were unconscious, then drive an ice pick like tool into both eye sockets, one at a time of course, and then jiggle the tool back and forth, basically scrambling those sections of the frontal lobes.  We having fun yet!?

By the 1980’s such procedures were shunned, so the institution was then down sized to where around 300 patients were kept on site.  Many of the old buildings that were part of the institution were donated to Ohio State University, yeah, anybody want to move into one of these buildings? NOT!  Anyway by 1993 the entire institution was closed down.

So back to these college students.  Tons of them made reports of being awakened in the dead of night by disembodied screams.  Many of them also made reports of shadowy figures that lurked around the buildings, watching their every move.  But one of the most well known haunting of this building has left evidence that anyone can see at any time.

On December 1st 1979 patient Margaret Schilling turned up missing.  Despite, obviously half-assed attempts to locate her, Margaret was nowhere to be found.  42 days later her body was found locked in an abandoned wing of the facility.  She was discovered naked, her clothes folded neatly beside her.  The creep factor here is about to go off the charts!  The poor bastards that actually found Margaret discovered that her corpse had been basically glued to the concrete floor by her bodily fluids.  No matter how many times or what chemical was used, the perfect outline of Margaret’s body is still there.

Margaret of course is well aware of the stain, she can sometimes be seen hovering around it or otherwise trying to escape the room where she perished.
